Letterboxing has been around since 1854, when a park ranger put a jar out for visitors to put their cards into. He later placed a box in a harder to find place where people would leave postcards. When someone found the box they would take the card and mail it and leave another card in its place.  It’s because of this practice that the activity became coined “letterboxing.” Today the practice of letterboxing has evolved to include a rubber stamp and a log book for people to stamp.
