Are We There Yet? Scotland on a journey: national ambition and local reality

Our vision: A Scotland where every child’s right to play is valued and protected, where every child has the freedom, space and time to play.
In the Play Vision Statement and Action Plan, 2025 – 2030 Scottish Government states their vision for Scotland is that “play is welcomed, celebrated and nurtured. That every child is able to play across all stages and aspects of their life to support their social development, resilience, language and communication development, health, physical and mental wellbeing”, but childhood is experienced locally. Scotland is still on a journey to ensure that every child in Scotland has quality play experiences in their life. That’s why we’re excited to launch our new five-year strategy, setting out how the national ambition becomes local reality as we work towards our mission:
Over the next five years Play Scotland will turn the national ambition for every child’s right to play into local reality by leading change, empowering people, and shaping environments.
We have developed our approach into three key strands: Lead, Empower and Shape that encompass all the work we do at the moment and will continue to build on over the next five years. You can read about the key strands, and the principles that underpin everything we do via the strategy document below.
At the strategy launch, our CEO, Mary Duncan, finished with a challenge question:
“Five years can seem like quite a short time for an adult, but to a child, five years is an enormous part of their childhood. Children can’t wait for us to get it right for them…when we meet again in five years, what will actually be different for every child in Scotland?”
