Where do the Children Play

pdf (2.53 MB)

“As a child, connection to the outdoors and being able to run around freely with your friends to
kick a ball, play tig, build a den or ride on your bike are essential”

Iain Monteith, Director at Loader & Monteith Architects, talks us through his world of play growing up in a fourth storey deck access maisonette. He touches on the difficulties he faced when going out to play, and how his memories and experiences help to guide his architectural work when designing with families and residential neighbourhoods in mind.

“I understand small details are actually life changing. They can create exclusion in physical connection to space leading to isolation or heighten existing anxieties. Equally they can bring people together and help create positive relationships and experiences”
