Policy Groups

​Play Scotland is dedicated to championing children’s right to play by actively participating in various policy groups that shape play, education, and child welfare policies across Scotland and the UK. Our involvement ensures that play remains a priority in policy discussions, fostering environments where children can thrive. Below is an overview of the key policy groups we are proud to be members of, highlighting our commitment to advocating for play at every level.

The UK Children’s Play Policy Forum (UKCPPF)

Play Scotland provides the Secretariat to and is a member of The UK Children’s’ Play Policy Forum (UKCPPF). UKCPPF works to advocate for, promote and increase the understanding of the importance of children’s play and quality, inclusive play provision by working with devolved, national and local government; and the voluntary, public and private sectors throughout the United Kingdom.

The Play Safety Forum (PSF)

Play Scotland provides the Secretariat to and is a member of The Play Safety Forum (‘PSF’). PSF was formed in 1993, it exists to consider and promote the wellbeing of children and young people through ensuring a balance between safety, risk and challenge in respect of play and leisure provision.

Playwork Education Training Council (PETC)

Play Scotland provides the Secretariat to and is a member of the Playwork Education and Training Council (PETC). It is a forum with oversight of the playwork education, training, and qualifications of their respective geographies within Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

UK Playwork NOS Consortium

Play Scotland provides the Secretariat to and is a member of the UK Playwork NOS Consortium. The purpose of the consortium is to plan strategically across the four nations for the future of workforce development and sector skills initiatives in respect of playwork. In particular, to be in a position to ensure that a future review of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) is undertaken by a consortium of organisations who can demonstrate sector expertise and buy in.

British Standards Institute SW/65 – Children’s playground equipment

Play Scotland is a member of BSI SW/65. Under the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee, is responsible for the UK input to CEN/TC 136/SC1 (and liaison with SW/136 & WGs) and for the preparation of British Standards for Children’s Playground Equipment

Children’s Sector Strategic and Policy Forum

Play Scotland is a member of the Children’s Sector Strategic and Policy Forum, which is coordinated by Children in Scotland. The Forum brings together sector leaders to discuss issues of strategic importance for the children’s sector and takes a proactive and evidence-based approach to improving children’s lives at a national level. The Forum also seeks to identify where it can add value to work that is already underway across the sector.

Cross Party Groups

Play Scotland is a member of various Cross Party Groups at the Scottish Parliament including Children and Young People, Accident Prevention and Safety Awareness, and Autism.
